wye-oak

Baby, it’s cold outside. So for the boiler to fail in the flat only hours after the ‘Corgi approved’ plumber came to check it makes for a socks in bed scenario – whoever bought me the Tootsies for Christmas, I thank-you.

In a vain attempt to feel warm I’ve chosen to play Wye Oak who make folkshoegaze (which is not as bad as the name suggests). Their album didn’t get a great play on my stereo last year due to the early arrival of two Ecstatic Peace records, Religious Knives and Hush Arbors. Now, sat up cold in bed, I’m beginning to regret such neglect. The driving tempo is reassuring like that of 70’s country ballads and the pursed lip vocals add to the comfort music vibe. Maybe this is a guilty pleasure, maybe I’m that cold, maybe I’m too tired. I don’t know. But right here right now, this band are all I could ask for (well besides a working heating system that is).

They’re signed to Merge Records who are giving away an online sampler via the link, with Conor Oberst, American Music Club and Lambchop on amongst other newbies such as She&Him. Myspace via photo as per usual.
