The worst beatles cover ever

I’ve been apart of my fair share of poor Beatles covers. The first one was performed with the GCSE Music department. It was a medley arranged for Piano, Trumpet, Clarinet, Trombone, Guitar and Violin performed at the Bridgewater Hall. It was an operation in easy listening.

The second occasion was at a friend’s birthday party. She liked the fabs so much that she was able to excuse our appalling rendition of Twist and Shout.

I don’t care that I’ve done bad cover versions – I’m not the first and I certainly won’t be the last – however I can’t see the incentive to cover a song that is so easily considered to be a classic, any cover just leaves the performer open to criticism (with the exception of Ike and Tina which is clearly better than the original ever was). What surprises me is the level of protectionism with which people approach the Beatles – as if there’s a band that just didn’t need defending. On a further note, it’s surprising how my ‘Let it Rot’ t-shirt has provoked so much distain amongst friends.

The above rendition of Come Together, posted on youtube under the name of this post has been subject to much criticism, 98 comments to be exact. The most popular have been:

vindogus: Good lord, this is like watching an animal get torutured

jshsgsf: who is this? Yoko Ono?

HouseofBlues56: your bassist obviously draws most of their influence from whale mating calls.

whatdafrig4: OUCH ! YOKO REVISITED !

Although houseofblues56 is probably not au fait  with Merzbow and jshsgsf and whatdafrig4 are probably from the school of ‘Yoko ruined the Beatles’ it’s doubtful if their comments are constructive. They’ve used the youtube platform to attack some schoolkids who are making a beautiful racket out of a canonised song. Not trying to be controversial, but I like it. If I were at a gig with this band I’d be pretty chuffed.
