Eagle and Talon

In light of my hatred for the campaigning media I’ve swiftly become a hypocrite. It was intended, when the philosophy of this blog was etched into stone with biro, that it would share as few traits with journalism as possible, unfortunately for this blog there is an increasing amount of brilliant DIY girl groups appearing on my radar. In light of these bands (which I’m calling proto Grrrl) I’ve started compiling them – and even worse, going out of my way to find them – in order that ‘proto Grrrl’ (©bricolagemusic) will take off.

Talking to a friend he quickly suggested Mika Miko need adding to the list – in the same light Vivian Girls and Arial Pink could get thrown up there me thinks. All of a sudden we’ve start backtracking and Marnie Stern’s up there, Scout Niblett’s name has been muttered in the background and we’re wondering what kind of monster we’ve created.

So here starts the campaigning, ballot slips at the ready as I showcase proto Grrrls over the forthcoming weeks/months.

If getting angry is a faux-pas amongst new punks then the behaviour of Eagle and Talon is far from impeccable, however up against their older sisters they come across rather tame in comparison. Like many of their peers they’ve been about for a while but are slowly finding their voice. The sound on their first EP presents itself as lofi Sleater-Kinney – tongue in cheek, sexually charged noisy anthems by clearly skilled musicians. Closer to the self-deprecating school of punk than the takeitorleaveit academy of rock, Eagle Vs. Shark Eagle and Talon are comics over activists. Casio keyboards swirling around, D.I.Y. guitars grating laconically as weird, disjointed musings pass in and out of comprehension. I’m willing to concede that the new record may be short of perfectly realised conceptions but the subtlety to their ingenuity cannot be ignored.
